Dinan is a manufacturer of BMW aftermarket parts designed and engineered to take performance to the next level.
From Repairs to Design
Thirty-five years ago Steve Dinan, an avid amateur racer, started a simple repair shop in the San Francisco Bay area. As his business grew, he began selling BMW performance parts from various manufacturers.
Dinan soon discovered that some parts did not meet his exacting standards – so like any good entrepreneur, he designed and engineered his own, and Dinan Engineering was born.
3D CAD, 3D Scanning, and 3D Printing
Dinan bought SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD in 2003 from reseller GoEngineer. The parametric design features along with the ability to build/revise 3D models quickly and then automatically generate 2D drawings drastically increased efficiencies.
Creaform 3D scanning technology enabled even better improvements. Before bringing 3D scanning on board, the company had to keep a car for several weeks, because capturing stock parts was a manual and trial-and-error-laden process. Now Dinan needs a car for only one day to easily scan all the required areas for stock parts, after which development is completed on computers.
The Stratasys 3D printer enables Dinan to not only fit-check all parts before committing to metal, but to also make custom fixtures that plug right into the fixture table.
Good Partners Matter
Dinan Design Engineer James Leong says, “GoEngineer has been there for us from the get-go to provide support and training every step along the way with 3D CAD, 3D scanning, and 3D printing. They worked hard to get us up to speed quickly and continue to offer suggestions to improve how we doing things.”
