In this video I show how an interesting and powerful function in Geomagic Design X (DX). DX has the ability to unroll or roll mesh or point cloud scan data. I show the scan of a drill bit and how to unroll the scan mesh into a flat scan. From there a 2D mesh sketch (with optional design intent) can be created, then the sketch is rolled in a cylindrical fashion to create a 3D sketch. The resulting 3D sketch consists of several helical splines. These will act as a path for a surface sweep, and use the profile created from an additional 2D mesh sketch. From there the 2 surfaces are thickened into solid bodies so they can be used as cutting shapes to cut the main drill body. This functionality can improve the modeling process significantly.
