This video is for both SOLIDWORKS PDM Standard and Professional. In this video we cover how to set permissions in the PDM Administration tool. Permissions determine what a particular user account can do in PDM – whether they can check out and edit a file, or only look at it. Indeed, we can even prevent users from being able to see folders or files. Permissions are set for both folders and workflow states. Therefore, the permissions on a file can change as it is moved through the workflow, even if it stays in the same folder. While a file in the “Work In Progress” state can be checked out, once it is submitted for approval, it can no longer be checked out and modified. While permissions can be set for either individuals or groups, it is best to set permissions at the group level and then move users into or out of groups to set their permissions appropriately. This video also covers how to adjust user settings. Anything on the “Settings” dialog is saved at the user level only. While they can be set for a group, the changes are copied to the members of the group at the time they are set. New members of the group do not have their settings changed.
