How to Tell if the SOLIDWORKS Composer Importer/Translator is Installed

Article by GoEngineer on Feb 11, 2014

SOLIDWORKS Composer can import native SOLIDWORKS files. To do this, the machine needs to have an additional program/tool install. One option is to install SOLIDWORKS to import files into Composer or install the SOLIDWORKS Importer/Translator. 3DVIA Composer and SOLIDWORKS Composer 2013 use the SOLIDWORKS Importer. SOLIDWORKS Composer 2014 and later use the SOLIDWORKS Translator.

The following sections will show how to find if a SOLIDWORKS Importer/Translator is installed.

SOLIDWORKS Composer 2014 and later

SOLIDWORKS Composer 2014 and later install through the SOLIDWORKS installation manager. That means to tell if the SOLIDWORKS Translator is installed the installation manager needs to be launched.

The installation manager is found from

  • Windows Control Panel->Programs->Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program)
  • Find SOLIDWORKS 2014 or later, right-click and choose ‘Change’
  • Select the option ‘Modify the individual installation’ and ‘Next’
  • Click ‘Next’ through the Serial Number screen
  • On the Product Selection screen, expand SOLIDWORKS Composer and check the box for SolidWorks Translator

SOLIDWORKS Composer 2013

The SOLIDWORKS Importer is not listed in the Control Panel list of installed programs. The way that the SOLIDWORKS Importer is verified is through Windows Explorer.

The default location is:

C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\Composer\6.11\SW2013

When that folder is present and has about 2-3GB of data present then you have the SOLIDWORKS Importer installed.

SOLIDWORKS Composer 2013 Importer

Any 3DVIA Composer Version

The SOLIDWORKS Importer is not listed in the Control Panel list of installed programs. The way that the SOLIDWORKS Importer is verified is through Windows Explorer.

The default location is:

C:\Program Files\Dassault Systems\3DVIA Composer\6.11(year version)\SW2013

When that folder is present and has about 2-3GB of data present then you have the SolidWorks Importer installed. The year version is set like this

  • Composer 2013 and 2013x -> 6.11
  • Composer 2012 and 2012x -> 6.10
  • Composer 2011 and 2011x -> 6.09

SOLIDWORKS Installation Manger Translator

SOLIDWORKS Composer 2013 and 3DVIA Composer

The SOLIDWORKS Importer is not listed in the Control Panel list of installed programs. That means the uninstall process is unorthodox. The uninstall is done by running a uninstall batch file that the SOLIDWORKS importer creates when it installs.

To uninstall the SOLIDWORKS Importer

  • Browse to either location depending on your version (3DVIA or SOLIDWORKS ) C:\Program Files\Dassault Systemes\3DVIAComposer\6.11\SW2013 C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\Composer\6.11\SW2013
  • Run the UninstallSWImporter batch file located there
  • Delete the SW2013 folder

The uninstall will be successful if 1) the DOS window that opens displays for several minutes and 2) the majority of the files in the SW20XX folder are automatically deleted.
