Restoring Files from a Crashed Computer: SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM

Article by Francisco Guzman on Sep 14, 2014

Sometimes a computer may crash and stop functioning at the most inopportune moment. Files that you have checked out and have been working with are now trapped in the bad computer. You have diligently checked files in to prevent loss of work, but you still have some files that you would like to recover. The purpose of this article is to provide a procedure to restore files from a crashed computer in SOLIDWORKS Enterprise PDM.

Restoring files

The idea is to replace the checked out (writable) locally-cached file from the vault in the good computer with the ones recovered from the crashed computer. It is a good idea to do this next process in a small cluster of files or one file at a time. These instructions will show the process for restoring one file at a time.

  1. Get a copy of the modified files to restore.
  2. Log into Enterprise PDM Vault view using the Admin credentials.
  3. At this point, the files that were checked out by the user in the bad computer are still checked out. Undo Check out of a file you are going to restore.
  4. Check out the file (this is where proper permissions are necessary).
  5. Ensure that the files have the same name. For this to work, the file that you are dragging in must be the same name as the cached file you are replacing.
  6. Replace the cached file in Enterprise PDM with the recovered file by dragging and dropping the recovered file. If done right, you will be prompted to replace the file.

  7. Repeat as necessary.
  8. Verify in SOLIDWORKS that everything is replaced and restored correctly before checking in the restored files.
  9. Check the files in.
