For decades, the machine shop has been the heartbeat of the manufacturing floor. When a new line starts or a part design changes, the first call is to the CNC department to mill out a set of 6061-T6 aluminum jigs and fixtures. It’s a tried-and-true process, but these days, tried-and-true is quickly becoming slow and expensive.

While low-cost, entry-level desktop or handheld 3D scanners introduce basic scanning concepts, they often leave students with noisy, uncalibrated surface meshes rather than actionable measurement data. To bridge the gap between classroom theory and modern manufacturing practices, engineering labs must adopt true metrology-grade 3D scanning workflows.

Scaling your campus prototyping facility doesn’t have to mean doubling your square footage or hiring a second shift of lab staff. By pairing targeted SLA and SLS hardware automation with smart queue management software, campus labs can handle more student jobs per week, keeping TAs focused on teaching.

If you've been following GoEngineer's partnership with Bright Laser Technologies, you already know what BLT's machines can print: the titanium hinge inside OPPO's Find N5 foldable phone, the metal O-rings BLT produces under an Airbus A320 production contract, the record-setting BYD Yangwang U9X, whose chassis relies on BLT printers for a structure that's both lighter and stiffer than conventional casting could produce. These aren't prototypes. They're production parts, used at scale, today. And behind it all is Dr. Xue Lei (“Leo”), Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Bright Laser Technologies.
