3DEXPERIENCE: 3DDrive vs 3DSpace

Article by Angel Palomo on Sep 23, 2025

The 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers a comprehensive suite of tools for collaborative product development. Among these tools, 3DDrive and 3DSpace stand out as essential applications for file storage and management. While they may seem similar at first glance, each serves a distinct purpose and caters to different user needs within the platform.

What is 3DDrive?

3DDrive functions similarly to popular cloud storage services, like Dropbox and OneDrive. It allows users to store, access, edit, and share files from any device. It can be found under My Apps in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, either in the browser or directly within SOLIDWORKS.

What is 3DDrive in 3DEXPERIENCE?

Users can create and collaborate on documents in real-time and even integrate external cloud storage services. 3DDrive is ideal for flexible file sharing, especially with external users, and supports traditional folder structures without built-in data management tools.

What is 3DSpace?

In contrast, 3DSpace is designed for more structured and secure data management. It incorporates features like access permissions, revision control, and maturity levels.

In 3DSpace, users can join a Collaborative Space, enabling them to work together on projects in real time. Within this environment, files can be designated as either In Work or Released, providing clear visibility into their status. Additionally, users can lock files, preventing simultaneous edits and ensuring version control is maintained.

3DEXPERIENCE 3DSpace Features

This makes 3DSpace suitable for engineering teams that require Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) capabilities, including change orders, history, and approval workflows.

3DEXPERIENCE 3DSpace vs 3DDrive

Which is Better?

3DDrive is best for general file sharing and collaboration, especially with external stakeholders, while 3DSpace is tailored for internal teams, requiring robust data governance and lifecycle management. Both apps are accessible directly within SOLIDWORKS, offering seamless integration. Choosing between the two depends on your team's specific needs and readiness for PLM integration.
