Occasionally, we get asked if there is a way to track license usage for floating SOLIDWORKS licenses. This article covers a few options for how to do this.
The SolidNetWork License Manager Server has a log file that tracks all license usage and other helpful information, such as errors that prevent a computer from using a license.
Go to the Windows Start menu > All Apps > SOLIDWORKS Tools 20XX folder > SolidNetWork License Manager Server.
In the SolidNetWork License Manager Server, click the Server Administration tab.
Select View Log under License Server.
The default location for the log file is "C:\Program Files (x86)\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SolidNetWork License Manager\lmgrd.log”.
![]()
Note: The log file is reset every time the license server is stopped and restarted.
SOLIDWORKS doesn’t have a built-in analytics system to visualize this data, but it can be fed into a service like OpenLM Parser. This service will parse the activity in the log files to visualize/graph the use of your licenses.
Since SOLIDWORKS does not have a way to visualize the data, we have found a few resources that have varying costs and other capabilities. Any of these tools will report on license usage over a given timeframe.
