What Type of Abaqus License Do I Have and How Do I Use It?
Abaqus licenses are hosted from a license server which all clients must be able to access on the network. There are a few options of license systems used to host an Abaqus license and the procedures to install or update the license are very different for each type. The check button below will identify the type of license system you have based on the name of your license file and provide specific information about that system.
FlexNet license system
- The license is hosted from a customer license server where the FlexNet software must be installed and occasionally updated. The FlexNet software comes in the Abaqus installation media described here.
- You will be prompted for the license file during installation of the FlexNet software.
- A new license file keyed to the license server's unique MAC address must be installed each year:
- Run the FlexNet Licensing Utilities (LMTOOLS) on the license server
- Make note of the current license file directory and file name reported at the bottom of the Start/Stop/Reread page.
- Overwrite the old license file by renaming the new file and copying it to the same directory as the current one.
- Click the ReRead License File button in LMTOOLS.
- Review the end of the simulialm.log file in the license directory for any errors.
- The license server may be a virtual machine.
- The license server should allow firewall exceptions for lmgrd.exe and simulialm.exe programs.
- License tokens are supported but credits are not.

- We highly recommend converting your license to the Managed DSLS system at no additional cost. It requires no license installation or maintenance from the user, as it is all handled by Dassault Systemes on their servers (so internet access is required). Contact us to learn more.
Customer-hosted DSLS license system
- The license is hosted from a customer license server where the DSLS software must be installed and occasionaly updated. The DSLS software comes in the Abaqus installation media described here, or may be downloaded separately here.
- The license file must be enrolled after installing the DSLS software on the license server:
- From the License Server Administration tool, connect to the license server.
- Next, select the Enroll option under the License menu. The license file must be enrolled after installing the DSLS software on the license server:
- A new license file keyed to the license server's unique target ID must be enrolled each year or whenever credits are added
- Running DSLS on a virtual computer is not recommended due to very strict requirements.
- License tokens and credits are both supported.
- License files may expire if not installed promptly and will need to be reissued.

Managed DSLS license system
- This newest license system is recommended for all customers due to its convenience and reliability. There is no additional cost for this license system.
- The license is hosted directly by Dassault Systèmes on triple-redundant servers. No customer equipment is used and no license server software needs to be installed. Clients must have internet access.
- License tokens and credits are both supported.
- There is a one-time configuration required for each client computer and no license maintenance after that.
- Your company is assigned an administrative website where you can review license usage or modify access rights of individual users or groups.
